Dual Language Immersion: A Strong Start for Bilingual Learning

Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs provide young learners with the opportunity to develop fluency in both English and Spanish, setting them up for long-term academic and personal success. In these programs, students build reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in both languages while learning alongside peers from diverse language backgrounds.

At Four Rivers Family, we connect parents with local Dual Language Immersion programs offered at both the preschool and elementary school levels. These programs, such as the Two-Way Immersion program at Chenowith Elementary (North Wasco School District), create structured learning environments where children grow bilingual and biliterate through a gradual progression of language instruction—starting with a strong foundation in Spanish and increasing English instruction over time.

By enrolling in a Dual Language Immersion program, children gain valuable cognitive and cultural skills, preparing them to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. Explore the options available in your community and find the right fit for your child’s bilingual journey!

Dual Language Immersion vs. Dual Language Preschool: What’s the Difference?

While Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs and Dual Language Preschools both expose children to bilingual learning, they serve slightly different purposes and structures. Understanding the difference can help families choose the best path for their child’s language development.

Dual Language Immersion (DLI) – A Structured Bilingual Education Program

DLI is a formal K-5 (or beyond) education program designed to develop full bilingualism and biliteracy in all students enrolled—both native English and native Spanish speakers. These programs use a structured Two-Way Immersion model, balancing instruction between both languages over time.

  • Equal representation: Half of the students speak Spanish as their first language, and half speak English.

  • Structured language progression: Younger grades start with a higher percentage of instruction in Spanish, gradually shifting to a balanced 50/50 split by later elementary years.

  • Long-term bilingual fluency: Students continue developing strong literacy and academic skills in both languages.

Dual Language Preschools – Early Exposure to Bilingual Learning

Dual Language Preschools provide bilingual instruction at the preschool level, serving both Spanish and English-speaking children in a nurturing, play-based learning environment. Unlike DLI, these preschools do not follow a strict Two-Way Immersion model but instead introduce both languages through curriculum and daily interactions.

  • Open enrollment: Students may come from any language background—no formal balance of native English and Spanish speakers is required.

  • Flexible bilingual exposure: Lessons, songs, and activities are offered in both languages to encourage early language development.

  • Ideal preparation for DLI: Attending a dual language preschool can help children transition more smoothly into a formal DLI program in kindergarten.

Both programs offer valuable benefits for young learners, but Dual Language Preschools serve as a foundation, while Dual Language Immersion provides a long-term bilingual academic track. If your goal is for your child to become fluent in both Spanish and English, starting with a Dual Language Preschool and transitioning into a DLI program is a great way to ensure success!
